AI Reading Tutor

Overview

Our team faced a critical challenge: to design from scratch a platform for German schools that helps struggling elementary students improve their reading skills, while enabling teachers to save time on task creation and grading through AI-powered automation.

Challenge

The challenge was to design a child-friendly interface that motivates students without diminishing their achievements or introducing competition, as seeing others’ successes could be demotivating, while fully complying with German educational guidelines and requirements.

Process

The process involved numerous workshops with the client team and education specialists, iterative refinement of user flows, creation of final mockups and graphic assets (including illustrations), and several rounds of design reviews.

Solution

The interface for children was designed with input from education experts and child psychology, featuring intuitive flows, clear feedback, and gamified elements to keep them engaged without fostering competition or discouragement. Tasks of varying complexity are easy to understand, and technical aspects like sound checks are simple to use.

For teachers, the platform offers an intuitive system to create and schedule reading tasks, track class performance, and identify struggling students, while complying with Germany’s strict data protection rules.

Impact

The platform has been successfully implemented in schools across Lower Saxony. Following the initial rollout, it underwent several refinements, including improvements to navigation and task management, and is now fully operational, effectively supporting students’ reading development and streamlining teachers’ workflow.
